Full backyard landscaping: pergolas, decking and lighting
Most villa owners who call us want one of three things: a pergola over the seating area, a deck around the pool, or lighting so the garden is usable after sunset. Those three jobs touch each other more than people expect, so we plan them together instead of as separate trades.
A full backyard project usually covers the layout and levels, the pergola structure and its foundations, decking or paving, planting and turf, irrigation and drainage, and the lighting and power that run through all of it. Cable routes and drainage falls are easiest to get right before the deck boards go down or the pergola posts are set. Added later, they mean cutting into finished work.
How pergolas, decking and lighting fit together
The pergola decides where the shade falls, so it sets where people sit and eat. Decking and paving follow the same lines, so the floor under the pergola and the path to the pool read as one space. Lighting goes in last on site but is planned first: downlights in the pergola frame, strip lights under deck edges and steps, uplights for trees and a few low path lights. It all runs on low-voltage circuits, and anything near the pool water uses fittings rated for wet locations.
For more ideas on shade, privacy and planting, read our villa garden and landscaping ideas for Dubai. If you only want the structure, see our pergola contractors page or our decking contractors page. For the wider garden, planting and irrigation, see landscape design and build. If a new pool is part of the plan, our pool construction team builds it alongside.

Backyard landscaping questions
How much does a full backyard project cost in Dubai?
It depends on the size of the plot, the type of pergola and the area of decking. A pergola over one seating area and a whole garden rebuild are very different jobs, so we price after a site visit and design. We do not publish a flat rate, because a number without the plot and the specification would mislead you.
Do I need permission to build a pergola on my villa?
In most master communities, yes. Developers and community managers usually want drawings first, and some limit the height, size and materials. Municipality rules can apply too, depending on the structure. Ask your community management early. The design drawings from the first stage are what you would submit.
Which lasts longer in Dubai heat, aluminium or wood?
Powder-coated aluminium does not rot, warp or attract termites, and it needs little more than a wash. Timber looks warmer but needs regular oiling or sealing, at least once a year in full sun, to stop it greying and splitting.
Can lighting and decking be added around an existing pool?
Yes. Decking around a pool needs the edge, drainage and levels checked first, and lighting near water has to be low-voltage and rated for wet locations. We check both on the site visit.
Can I build the pergola first and add the rest later?
Yes. Many villa owners start with one piece, a pergola or a deck, and add the rest later. If the full layout is planned first, the first piece is built in the right place and with the cable routes already in.
